Finding a university should not require students to become experts in navigating hundreds of institutional websites before they can even understand their options. With responsible AI at work, this was the problem behind Pathwise Universities, the new university discovery platform initiated by ICARUS AI.
Pathwise starts with a deliberately simple experience. A student can search directly for a university, program, country or subject, much as they would use a conventional search engine. Students who want more guidance can instead answer a small number of questions about their degree level, field, preferred study mode and destination. The platform then uses AI-assisted matching to identify universities that correspond to those preferences.
The objective is not to create another ranking system. It is to reduce friction between a student’s needs and the institutions that may be relevant to them.
“Students should benefit first,” says Nektar Baziotis, Founder of ICARUS AI. “The role of AI here is not to decide a student’s future. It is to make a very fragmented search process clearer. Universities are recommended according to what the student tells us they need, and the student remains in control of the decision.”
Built through complementary expertise
ICARUS is the main initiator of Pathwise and leads the overall platform direction. The initiative brings together several organisations with different responsibilities.
Global Humanistic University (GHU) contributes academic standards and first-hand knowledge of the needs, questions and decision-making challenges students face when considering higher education.
Thrive Thrace contributes to the AI development supporting the discovery and matching experience.
Apogee Information Systems contributes expertise around security and technology standards, an important part of a platform handling student accounts, institutional data and digital interactions.

This structure reflects an important principle behind Pathwise: useful education technology is not only a software problem. It requires academic understanding, responsible AI, secure infrastructure and direct knowledge of how institutions and students actually interact.
Search first, register later
Pathwise has also been designed to avoid unnecessary friction. Students can begin searching before creating an account. Registration becomes useful when they want to save universities, maintain a shortlist or track inquiries.
The guided wizard is intentionally short because the platform should help students reach useful information faster rather than create another lengthy admissions questionnaire.
The results page follows the same principle. Instead of assigning universities an artificial quality score, Pathwise presents institutions according to the student’s selected preferences and gives users direct access to relevant university information and contact points.
Visibility without buying the match
Universities can also participate through featured placements and sponsored visibility. However, sponsored promotion is separated from the organic AI-assisted matching process.
The principle is straightforward: universities may pay for visibility, but not for a better organic match.
That distinction matters because Pathwise is intended to create value for both sides of the higher-education market without compromising the student’s trust in the search process.
